Prizes Awarded at the 30th Icicle Meet, 5th & 6th January 2002

Veuve Cliquot Cup Travelled furthest with a balloon specially to be at Icicle Meet. Cup (Keep for 1 year)Plus: Cameron logo shirt, and bottles of Champagne for 2nd and 3rd places G-BECK, Malcolm White, travelled with balloon from Dublin. 2nd place, Richard Gyselynck, G-BXHL from Isle of Man; and 3rd David Eliot with G-LIOT from Aberdeen, who would have been first on distance, but told us he didn’t bring it specially to Icicle, it is now staying in the South.
The Hilton Hotels Prize Main Flying Task – Grid Reference adding up to 30, tie-break on the most Southerly landing. Hilton Hotel prize, probably dinner for two, plus the Newbury Building Society Shield (keep for 1 year), plus a bottle of Champagne Richard Parry, along with several other pilots discovered the grid reference for Warren Farm adds up to 30. Richard did a hop over the Northern edge of the field on Saturday, and just to ensure he was not outflanked by anyone else, did a hop over the Eastern edge on Sunday, getting a more Southerly grid reference by 0.1km.
Gemini Trophy Oldest balloon to fly out of the Field. Wooden Balloon Trophy (Keep for 1 year). Plus small hand carved wooden balloon to keep. G-BECK (Noddy), Malcolm White. The balloon is a Viva 56, registered in 1976.
Aim High Trophy Smartest balloon, including tethered only. Trophy (Keep for 1 year)Plus: Bottle of Champagne G-BWKW (Road to Mandalay), Thunder AX8/9, recently brought back to UK after many years in the Far East. Brought to the meet by Phil Dunnington.
Chequers Trophy Longest Flight from Icicle. Trophy (Keep for 1 year)Plus: Probably a weekend for two at a Hilton hotel. G-RISE, Jonathan Smith, flew to Steventon in Oxfordshire (between Wantage and Abingdon), a distance of 34.2km.
Norman Betts Award Newest Pilot at Icicle Norman Betts Shield (Keep for 1 year)Plus: Bottle of Champagne Simon Whatley PP401744G/BA, licence dated 29th November 2001, registered G-BULD at the meet.
Marsh Benham Trophy For Services to ballooning in the Newbury area. Silver RosebowlPlus: Bottle of Champagne Celia Kunert, for her superb achievement in organising the Trade Stands and Social side of Icicle, based at the Hilton hotel.
Other Minor Prizes For allowing us to use Warren Farm once again as the venue for the meet. Bottle of Single Malt. James Liddiard, with special thanks this year, remembering that FMD is barely behind us, and James has a milk herd of several hundred animals.
